5 Canali YouTube di musica bizzarra e demenziale
Da quando YouTube ha permesso a chiunque di poter mettere in mostra il proprio talento musicale se ne è vista di musica bizzarra, demenziale e fuori dagli schemi, anche se di alcuni tormentoni musicali nati grazie al web ne avremmo anche fatto volentieri a meno.
Quest’emersione collettiva di musica strampalata ha però portato a galla anche determinati cantanti, musicisti o DJ che, pur sfoggiando uno stile musicale che molto difficilmente troverebbe spazio all’interno di tv o radio, hanno dimostrato comunque di avere grande talento, anche e soprattutto perché follia e demenzialità non sempre sono sinonimo di bassa qualità.
Per questa lista sono stati esclusi tutti i possibili fenomeni da baraccone e tutta quella musica bizzarra su YouTube che però ha goduto della luce dei riflettori diventando virale, quindi niente “Gangnam style” o “What does the fox say?”. Quella che state per leggere non è musica che finirebbe su un “Year in review“ di Google, ma personalità che bene o male sono rimaste su YouTube, semi-sconosciute ai più, o anche soggetti abbastanza popolari in patria, ma sconosciuti nel nostro paese.
Ecco quindi la classifica di 5 cantanti, musicisti e DJ che ho scovato all’interno del magico mondo di YouTube i cui pezzi nascondono, dietro un primo strato di demenzialità, un ottimo livello di cura e qualità.
5 – BOTANICSAGE
Apriamo la classifica dei 5 canali YouTube di musica bizzarra e demenziale con BotanicSage: un’alchimista delle colonne sonore, soprattutto quelle di videogiochi e film.
BotanicSage mescola due temi musicali tra loro ricavandone dei piccoli capolavori, a volte rallentando o velocizzando uno dei due per adeguarlo all’altro.
Fin qui niente di particolarmente speciale, esistono diversi canali che mischiano insieme dei pezzi, ma personalmente credo che BotanicSage meriti riconoscimento maggiore per essere riuscito a mettere insieme alla perfezione temi che mai ci si aspettava potessero convivere così bene fra loro.
Si parla di brani come una fusione perfetta tra la battle theme di Final Fantasy VII con il tema di John Cena, o quella tra la musichetta di Duck Hunt con il brano “Who let the dogs out?” dei Baha Men, e persino un’assurda fusione tra due dei temi musicali dei videogiochi più famosi: il main theme di Mortal Kombat e il famoso “DK Rap” del gioco Donkey Kong 64, risultante in un divertentissimo (e ben curato) “Mortal Kongbat”.
4 – MC CAVALLO
MC Cavallo è l’unico esponente italiano di musica bizzarra e demenziale “made in YouTube” presente in questa lista. Si tratta di un ragazzo che fa rap con una maschera a forma di testa di cavallo e un accento spiccatamente sardo, i suoi brani sono decisamente espliciti, demenziali e provocatori oltre ogni limite.
Tuttavia, ad un secondo ascolto, ci si accorge che in realtà MC Cavallo se la cava più che bene con le rime, la maggior parte dei suoi videoclip sono ben curati e i pezzi, pur non essendo particolarmente illuminanti, mettono in mostra parecchie intuizioni simpatiche ed originali, come i featuring con le parodie di cantanti famosi come Eminem e Avril Lavigne. Da segnalare brani come “Basta con la morte”: una canzone di protesta al grido di “scendiamo tutti in piazza a protestare, la morte uccide”. O ancora il brano “me li presti 2 kili di culo”, che oltre ad avere un videoclip molto ingegnoso, si preannunciava parte di una tetralogia, la quale purtroppo è rimasta incompiuta a causa del ritiro di MC Cavallo dalle scene.
Pare che tempo fa il vero MC Cavallo abbia deciso di raccontare la propria storia all’interno di alcuni forum, rivelando di aver studiato al conservatorio ed essere stato beat maker (quindi non proprio un ignorante in fatto di musica). Ha anche pubblicato un disco intitolato “Cavallo di Troia“.
3 – PARRY GRIPP
Parry Gripp è un americano quasi cinquantenne che da anni canta di criceti, coniglietti, pezzi di pizza, pinguini, pancakes e quant’altro, con tanto di videoclip a cartone animato per ogni pezzo.
Gripp è il sogno vivente di qualsiasi persona che abbia mai desiderato che i video con animaletti carini che spopolano tanto su YouTube avessero dei sottofondi musicali dedicati.
E’ l’unico cantante al mondo che può vantare nel suo repertorio di musica bizzarra una canzone su una scimmia che cavalca un maialino, una sul Polpo Paul, un’altra su un criceto che mangia un popcorn su un pianoforte, dozzine di canzoni su gattini e coniglietti e persino un paio di canzoni dedicate a un toast “addobbato” con parti del corpo di Mr. Potato chiamato Mr Raisintoast.
Nonostante la prima domanda che ci si pone durante l’ascolto di una qualsiasi canzone di Parry Gripp sia: “ma cosa sto ascoltando?”, bisogna riconoscere che quest’artista dispone davvero di una fantasia inesauribile, i suoi pezzi inoltre rimangono molto simpatici, con ritornelli davvero orecchiabili, altro che il pulcino Pio. Molto sottovalutato.
2 – MELODYSHEEP
Melodysheep, nome d’arte del giovane americano John Boswell, è il re dell’Auto-Tune.
Per chi non lo sapesse, Auto-Tune è un programma che serve a correggere l’intonazione di un cantante ed eventuali imperfezioni della voce, viene utilizzato spesso anche da artisti famosi.
Tuttavia Melodysheep non applica l’Auto-Tune alla propria voce, ma a quella di scienziati, astronomi, giornalisti, comici, mascotte delle pubblicità, personaggi di Game of Thrones e persino a quella del maestro Yoda, ricavandone brani divertenti e sinfonie rilassanti, degne del secondo posto nella classifica di canali YouTube di musica bizzarra.
Ci si ritrova ad ascoltare brani orecchiabilissimi cantati da scienziati come Carl Sagan e Neil deGrasse Tyson e dopo un po si comincia anche a perdere il senso di assurdità della cosa, tanto è alta la cura nei confronti di questi brani che li porta ad assomigliare a “canzoni vere proprie”.
Boswell ha raggiunto una certa popolarità in America non solo per quanto riguarda il numero di iscritti e visualizzazioni su YouTube, ma è riuscito anche a pubblicare qualche disco e a realizzare alcuni remix per il canale YouTube ufficiale della PBS.
Peccato che nel resto del mondo non sia così conosciuto (almeno per adesso).
1 – SYRSA
Syrsa è un artista svedese (“Syrsa” = “cavalletta” in svedese) dal volto ignoto e specializzato in musica techno la quale, però, non rappresenta la sua unica passione. Negli anni, infatti, ha saputo sperimentare anche con il disegno, la narrazione, l’animazione sia 2D che 3D ed ha anche realizzato un videogioco: Zerahypt.
Il primo posto nella classifica dei canali YouTube di musica bizzarra è dovuto ad alcune caratteristiche particolari di Syrsa, come ad esempio i titoli strani e contorti dei suoi brani e i disegni da lui stesso realizzati raffiguranti fantastici paesaggi spesso desolati, veicoli futuristici e donne aliene con seni molto abbondanti, i quali facevano da sfondo ad ogni canzone (uso il verbo al passato perché molti di questi non sono più disponibili).
La particolarità principale di Syrsa, però, rimane il modo stesso in cui nasce musica, soprattutto agli inizi, quando una buona parte del suo repertorio era composto da remix ricavati dai meme di allora. Anni fa caricò anche un video dove mostrava come un semplice “DEUUEAUGH!” pronunciato da un pesce in un episodio di Spongebob dopo alcuni rallentamenti e ripetizioni riuscisse a diventare un pompatissimo ritmo techno irriconoscibile dal suono originale (anche se purtroppo il video è stato rimosso, brani come “Pondering Robotnik” e “I’m moovin’ nis” restano buoni esempi di applicazione di questa tecnica).
Ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere la splendida musica di questo artista quasi 8 anni fa, quando era agli inizi e la lista dei suoi video pubblicati su YouTube superava a stento la prima pagina. E’ bello vedere come da allora Syrsa abbia mantenuto la sua grande voglia di creare e sperimentare, mantenendo però anche quel suo lato più “strampalato”, come si nota ad esempio in un suo brano del 2014 “Gentleminerals”, dove a fare da sfondo al pezzo ci sono dei modelli 3d di un gruppo di sassi vestiti in modo elegante e dotati di un paio di baffoni.
Da ascoltare assolutamente “Athnias”, “Darkkeigan”, “Cruiser” e “Runes”.
Since when YouTube allowed everybody to show their musical talent, we’ve seen a lot of weird, bizzarre and out-of-schemes music, although certain songs popularized by the web were more annoying than ever.
But this mass emersion of new eccentric song pieces also allowed the birth of certain music personalities that have proven to be really talented, although their music hardly would find a place in the mainstream media.
For this list, we’re excluding all the “so bad it’s good” internet songs and the ones that are likable only in an “ironical way”. We are also excluding all the weird songs that became popular on a worldwide scale, so don’t expect to see “Gangnam Style” or “What does the fox say?” here, because the artists in this list wouldn’t be taken in consideration for a Google’s “Year in review”. We are only keeping the musicians, singers and DJs that we think showed a major level of talent and passion in their art beneath a first layer of eccentricity, but remained relatively obscure outside of YouTube.
5 – BOTANICSAGE
The fifth spot in our list of 5 strange music YouTube channels goes to BotanicSage: an alchemist of music that works in particular on video games and movie music themes.
Nothing extraordinary so far, there are in fact a lot of YouTube channels that specify on mixing songs together, but what makes BotanicSage so special is his ability to mix musical pieces that we would never expect to fit so well together.
We’re talking about awesome fusions like the one between the battle theme of Final Fantasy VII and the John Cena music theme, or the one that involves the Duck Hunt theme with “Who let the dogs out” by Baha Men, or even the mix between two of the most famous video game songs: the main theme of Mortal Kombat fused with the famous “DK rap” from Donkey Kong 64, resulting in the really funny “Mortal Kongbat”.

MC Cavallo (MC Horse) is the only Italian entry in our list of 5 strange music YouTube channels.
He’s a guy who raps with a strong sardinian accent wearing a latex horse mask, his songs are extremely explicit, weird and brakeless provocative.
However, beneath this layer of craziness, it’s possible to notice that his rhymes are really good, the home-made videoclips for his songs are still really well made and his songs, despite the lack of any deep message, present a certain number of funny intuitions in them, like the occasionally incursions of famous singers parodies, such as Eminem and Avril Lavigne.
Among his best works we can find songs like “Enough with death”: A protest song against the act of dying: “Let’s riot everybody, death kills”.
Or the song “Can you spare two kilograms of ass?”, for which a really good videoclip was made and that was announced as a tetralogy, but the other 3 songs were never realized due to MC Cavallo’s retirement from the scenes.
It is rumored that some times ago the real MC Cavallo did talk about his story on some italian forums, revealing that he studied music at the conservatory and also became a beat maker (declining any suspect of him being an improvised singer/musician). MC Cavallo also released an album named “Cavallo di Troia”.
Amazon YouTube3 – PARRY GRIPP
Parry Gripp is an almost fifty years old american man who sings about hamsters, bunnies, pizza slices, penguins, pancakes and many other things, accompanying every song with a cartoon-styled videoclip.
Gripp his the living dream of every guy who ever wanted that those funny YouTube videos about cute cats and hamsters had a proper theme song.
It’s the only singer in this world with a list of hits that includes a song about a monkey riding a pig, one about Paul the octopus, one about an hamsters eating a popcorn on a piano, dozens and dozens of songs about kittens and bunnies and even a couple ones about a piece of bread with Mr. Potato’s pieces called “Mr. Raisintoast”.
Although the first question that can arise while listening to a Parry Gripp song is “what the heck am i listening to?”, it’s important to remember that Gripp is a really talented artist with an inexhaustible source of creativity, with songs that remain funny and catchy. Really underrated.

Melody sheep, aka John Boswell, is the king of the Auto-tune.
For anyone who don’t already know what Auto-tune is, it’s a program that allows to modify and adjust the voice and pitch of a singer.
However, Melodysheep don’t uses Auto-tune to modify his own voice, but that of scientists, astronomers, journalists, comedians, popular mascots, Game of Thrones characters and even that of Master Yoda, creating funny songs and relaxing melodies, worth of the second place in our list of 5 strange music YouTube channels.
When you listen to really catchy Melodyseehp’s songs singed by scientists like Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson, after a while you’ll start to lose the perception of the absurdity of the thing due to the fact that Melodysheep’s songs are extremely well made and similar to the good hits that you could hear on the radio.
Boswell reached a certain level of popularity in America, not only for what concerns the number of likes and visualizations on YouTube, but he also actually released some albums between the years 2011 and 2013.
Unfortunately, his name remains obscure in almost every other part of the world (at least for now).
1 – SYRSA
Syrsa is a sweden artist (“Syrsa” = “cricket” in swedish) specialized in techno music, which, however, doesn’t represents his only skill. In fact, during the years, Syrsa managed to create drawings, stories, 2D and 3D animations and even a videogame: Zerahypt.
He takes the 1st spot on our list due to the peculiar style of his art: bizzarre music titles, drawings depicting amazing planets, futuristic vehicles and really busty alien women, which he uses as backgrounds in his own music videos.
The main characteristic of Syrsa’s art is that many of his tracks were just remixes obtained by modifying some meme sound clips, especially in the early days of his YouTube channel. Some years ago, he even uploaded a sort of tutorial on his channel showing how a simple “DEUEAUGH!” pronounced by a Spongebob fish character could become a very cool techno remix, totally unrecognizable from the original sound clip.
The “tutorial” has been deleted, but some of his tracks like “Pondering Robotic” and “I’m moovin’ his” are still good examples of the application of this particular technique.
I discovered Syrsa’s channel almost 8 years ago and i’m really glad that he managed to maintain the strange-side of his art as it was in the early days, as showed in “Gentleminerals”, a 2014 remix where three well-dressed rocks are used as background image for the music video.
Some of his best tracks: “Athnias”, “Darkkeigan”, “Cruiser” and “Runes”.
