1 – In the shape of an L

She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an “L” on her forehead

2 – SOME

3 – Codice segreto in Transmission

SMASH
MOUTH

4 – Codice Morse in Piss

5 – All Star è in tutto l’album, rallentato

A copule of months ago XCose brought you the top 5 best Mouth Moods songs by Neil Cicierega.

In that article I made some references to the easter eggs that Neil usually hides inside his songs and I then decided to make a whole article about the many secrets hidden inside his second album Mouth Silence: without a doubt his most “enigmatic” album filled with easter eggs, although some backstory is necessary: Mouth Silence was released as a sequel to Mouth Sounds: Neil’s first album that was 99% made of samples from Smash Mouth’s All Star (hence the title of all of his albums).

Neil Cicierega’s discography

The second album came with the obvious intention of being the opposite of it’s predecessor and – as the title suggests – this time All Star by Smash Mouth would have been completely absent from this work, and in fact that song wasn’t actually sampled in any of Mouth Silence’s 19 tracks.

Or at least that was what everyone though at first. In fact, that isn’t actually true.
Although Smash Mouth is effectively absent from all of Mouth Silence’s songs, Neil actually hid a lot of references to All Star and Smash Mouth everywhere in this album. Those references were then discovered by very loyal and hard working fans.

Let’s see then which are the 5 most funny, wit and absurd easter eggs hidden inside Mouth Silence.

1 – In the shape of an L

The first and most obvious reference to All Star is on the cover of the album itself.
Neil’s fingers are obviously shaped in the classic hand gesture for silence”, although the way his index finger and his thumb are positioned according to many could be a reference to a quote from the very first line from All Star:

She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb

In the shape of an “L” on her forehead

2 – SOME

Neil put another easter egg in the 19th track: Wndrwll.
The song is a distorted parody of Wonderwall by Oasis fused with the Full House theme song (Everywhere you look by Jesse Frederick) that starting at 1:36 to 1:38 becomes silent. Well, hid “inside” that silence, there’s a very quiet “some” from the beginning of All Star (it’s the “some” from “somebody once told me”), so far in the background that the easter egg hunters had to use such programs as Audacity to find it.

(Beware of possible ear rapings if you try to do the same).

3 – Secret code in Transmission

Even if it’s more of a skit than a real song, I love the 9th track Transmission for the very clever idea behind it.
It’s Space Oddity by David Bowie transformed into a sort of mysterious number station, with the countdown from the original song used to pronunce two sequences of numbers with a jingle between them.5 migliori easter egg in Mouth Silence di Neil Cicierega

83 77 65 83 72
77 79 85 84 72

The fans found out that those number sequences are all but random. Translating every couple of numbers with the help of an ASCII table it’s possible to decrypt the hidden message:

SMASH
MOUTH

4 – Morse code in Piss

5 migliori easter egg in Mouth Silence di Neil CicieregaThe 19th and last track of Mouth Silence, Piss, is not only the best of the whole album (followed by Crocodile Chop and Space Monkey Mafia), but it’s also the only art piece in existence where Return to Innocence by Enigma and the Hampsterdance could ever cohabit.

Starting from 2:30 its possible to hear a series of beeps in the background. Those are not simple beeps, but a real message in a form of a morse code that says: “Somebody once told me”.

5 – All Star is in the whole album, slowed down

Let’s close with the biggest Mouth Silence easter egg.

Remember when I said that All Star is literally everywhere in this album? That wasn’t an exaggeration: speeding the whole album up to crazy levels (up to 1500%) it’s possible to hear some parts of All Star (minutes 0:00; 1:21; 1:37; 2:31; 2:55):

Of course listening to the album at normal speed results in hearing these hidden samples as slow “wind sounds”: something that a first listener could very easily miss.

All of these hidden messages, codes and secret samples contribute to make Mouth Silence such a great album, one that, o course, I suggest everybody to give a listen.
